Friends,
Last week, the city crews came by our street and started digging up all old and broken
side-walk pavements. They then started making forms for new ones.
I noticed that they had formed the sidewalk in front of my house like the Picture shown
above! By the way, the pavement was straight before.
I stuck a sign over it to tell them to straighten it out. Next morning the sign was
laying on the grass. Apparently whoever came by to place the supports for the wire mesh
threw it out! So, I replaced the sign and went to work. During lunch time, I went
home to check and saw the crews making forms across the street from us. No one spoke
English except a young kid. I asked him to straighten it out. He said he will have to
ask his supervisor. Nothing was changed that evening!
The next day, I went home again at lunch time. Looked all over the neighborhood
trying to find the crews building the forms. No one was around within the four block
square!
When I got home that evening, they were already pouring concrete. The segment
in front of my house was poured and they were smoothing it as you can see below:

I got hold of the foreman next door down and asked him why he did not straighten out the
form. You will NOT believe what he told me! He said:
"THE EXTRA SPACE IS FOR THE HANDICAPPED PEOPLE TO PASS!"
I told you that you won't believe it!
As I was holding my stomach laughing, his supervisor drove up. I asked him the same
question and got the same answer! In fact, he said that is THE LAW! He also said that it
is done all over the neighborhood and offered to take me in his van to go look. Sure
enough, he showed me 4 or 5 of these "bulges". He even showed me a couple of others
where they had screwed up and forgot and had to redo it to provide that "extra" width
as you can see in this Picture!

Friends, don't get me wrong. I am not aginst the "idea" of providing that
"extra" width. But I don't understand the rationale behind this "half-hearted"
implementation! Just so that they could say that they have complied with
the "letter" of the LAW? I could see the need for it if it is a LONG block. But,
why put it right next to a driveway? Is the driveway itself wide enough for passing?
Also, why didn't they make it a little longer. The way it is, I don't know what they
have accomplished!
One more thing. In the segment in front of my house (Top Picture), Why didn't they make
it wide all the way to the driveway? Is it because the LAW says that it has to be a
trapazoidal in shape?
There's got to be a reason for all this nonsense. Only if someone can tell us!
Pass this on, man! Our politicians might have gone crazy!
